I read an article recently about some people who wanted to try eating locally grown in their area. Local meant within a radius of 100 miles. She encouraged the support of farmers and farmer's markets, suggesting that local grocery stores and restaurants support also by buying direct.
There are several reasons why this is a great idea. One, the food will be a lot frischer-and potentially more nutritious. Secondly, it will be cheaper, significantly reduced transport costs. Thirdly supports local economies. Fourthly, the use of questionable pesticides and chemicals of less is a problem. Keep DDT someone in mind? This stuff still take advantage of some countries around the world.
I think that this further should take a big step. Rush gardens. Who came with the idea that grass is the standard product, which, which we our ground around our homes with surface should be? Sure, it can beautifully when maintained... useful as surface to play games, etc.. Unless, of course, fire ants infiltrate it gives your formerly beautiful lawn.
I am not saying that everyone should do this, but certainly a fair number of people could be part or all of their front and back yards in herbs and vegetable gardens, plants, fruit trees, etc.. Preferably plants things that corresponds to their environment. And for those who say grass is easier to maintain, take more upkeep food crops, I say there is a chance for a new labour market or extending an existing.
Lawn-care company that normally people can mow grass expands to crop harvest - a related field on the surface, but one that would require education and training. Those who learn these skills would get more valuable and so their incomes increase.
New housing tracts of land was unable to allocate a lot or two for a park slash garden for the quarter and still have all the individual houses status quo with their stupid grass lawn. But I see not this ever those happens greed maximize their profit per hectare with each developer but with images, the world a better place through. However, a forward thinking could see developers as it would create a premium product in a market that the loss would be offset by revenue on a lot.
We must start our way of life in America in question and decide, whether some of the ways we have done things are made better could not. Like lawn gardens. Ernst.
